Not sure whether belly dance is for you? Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about belly dance classes...
Yes! Belly dance is a very low impact, aerobic activity that is suitable for all ages, body shapes, and fitness levels. The dance will teach you to connect with your body while toning the muscles in your core, thighs, butt, hips, and arms.
Nadiya's students are never forced to perform in public. However, opportunities are available for students who are interested in performing after an appropriate amount of study.
Most students wear comfortable pants (like yoga or pajama pants) or a long skirt and a fitted t-shirt or top. Belly dance is performed bare foot so shoes are not required (unless you have health issues or other reasons for needing to cover your feet). Coin belts will be provided for use during class, but students are welcome to bring their own.
Unfortunately, belly dance has gotten a bad reputation over the years because of the way the dance has been portrayed by ill-informed people. Belly dancers are not strippers or "loose women". The dance is actually based on the traditional dances of the tribes of the Middle East--very much like the dances performed at Native American pow-wows--and is very much about empowering women and strengthening the female body.
